‘The Daily Show’ wants to know why America is ignoring Boko Haram

On Thursday night’s “Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart and comedian correspondent Trevor Noah tried to work out why most Americans haven’t spent much time thinking about the Boko Haram massacres in Nigeria.
Noting that zero international heads of state visited Nigeria after the massacres, Noah said: “At least.
Noah, who is South African, also attempted to explain the basics of the situation to Stewart, who took on the role of a stereotypical American who isn’t particularly well-read on international news.
“Boko Haram, I’ve heard of them. #BringBackOurGirls?” Stewart asked when Noah brought up the subject.
“Yes, well, #TheyDidnt,” Noah responded.
In another effort to get Western viewers to care about Boko Haram, Noah called the extremist group

Boko Haram, an extremist group operating in Nigeria and some neighboring countries, destroyed the towns of Baga and Doron Baga on Jan. 7 — the same day gunmen entered the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo and opened fire, killing most of the satirical publication’s senior staff. The latter story captured the bulk of international coverage.
It’s still not clear how many people died in Baga alone. The number is certainly in the hundreds, although some officials fear alot.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has bragged several about the killings and promised more. “We indeed killed them, as our Lord instructed us in His Book,” he said in a video. “We will not stop. This is not much. You’ll see.”
Discussing the relative lack of coverage of Boko Haram, Noah said: “Sometimes, it just feels like Africa’s the Vegas of Islamic terror. What happens in Africa stays in Africa.”
Stewart and friends are something of a late entry into the debate over how the massacres have — and haven’t — been covered. Last week, Washington Post opinion columnist Karen Attiah responded against critics who made arguments similar to those of Noah and Stewart.
“We should all be infinitely more incensed by the Nigerian leadership’s lack of political will to come up with a comprehensive solution to Boko Haram’s murderous assault on Nigerian citizens,” Attiah wrote, “than about whether a major U.S. network has temporarily helicoptered its crew into the country.”
