Pastor Killed By Snakebite In Own Church

Middlesboro Police Chief Jeff Sharpe told that Jamie Coots was found dead in his home at about 10 p.m. Saturday after a snake allegedly bit him while he was handling it in his church, Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name.
Sharpe said Coots went home before emergency workers got to the church. Officials then went to his house and urged him to get medical care, but he refused. They said he died about an hour later.
Coots was one of several Pentecostal pastors who believe that several verses at the end of the New Testament book of Mark (Mark 16:17-18) commands Christians to handle deadly snakes in church services.
The National Geographic show profiled the serpent handling preachers, and a recent episode, Deadly Legacy, explored how Coots hoped to pass the chruch and the snake-handling tradition on to his son Little Cody.
